Last season, Masse was one of Eight (8) bursary recipients of $6,000 each

Kitchener-Waterloo Siskins (GOJHL) Trainer Sylvia Masse

Cambridge, ON – One thing is for sure, Sylvia Masse keeps busy! The University of Waterloo kinesiology student is doing her master’s with her research focusing on lower limb biomechanics, muscle activation, and fatigue.

She is on track to propose her thesis this summer and begin data collection in the fall. Her Fall 2024 term average was 90%. Her long-term goal is to become a doctor.

In addition, she is the trainer for the Kitchener-Waterloo Siskins (GOJHL) team. And if this isn’t enough, she also tutors students as well!

As one can expect, capturing a $6,000 bursary can be life changing. “The bursary helped me alleviate the financial burden of pursuing post-graduate education,” Masse said. “I can focus more on my courses and research.” This financial support allows Sylvia to invest more time in her academics and her real-world experience as the trainer of the K-W Siskins.”

In addition to the financial windfall, winning a $6,000 bursary goes a long way at personally propelling the recipients to the next level. “I have gained further confidence in my abilities as a student, a trainer, and a woman working in sports.” Masse said. “It has motivated me to keep learning and growing my career in hockey.”

With the 2025 Bursary Program underway and open to submissions, Masse has some advice for anyone that is thinking of applying. “Don’t wait around for opportunities to present themselves to you,” Masse said.” “Seek out opportunities that interest you and act on them, even if you think you may not be the perfect candidate.”
