Hockey: Governor, Cobourg Cougars (OJHL) from 2006 to 2022, co-hosted World Junior “A” Challenge in 2015, hosted and won RBC Cup (now the Centennial Cup) in 2017 (the Junior “A” National Championship) and Port Hope Panthers (2018 to 2022) and proud recipient of the Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Chairman Award in 2018, which award was subsequently re-named “The Marc Mercier Chairman’s Award” in 2021. Marc retired from playing hockey at the age of 51 after a non-illustrious career as a goalie spanning 45 years.
Importance of OHA to me: It is an honor and a privilege to help guide the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA), which traces its roots to 1890, thereby making it one of the oldest hockey organizations in the world. While I am proud of the OHA’s past, I am very excited by its future. I strongly believe in the OHA motto that we “grow individual and communities through hockey”. I look forward everyday to make a positive and impactful difference by working hard with our board and staff for the benefit of our game, our players and their families, our leagues, our many stakeholders, including our fans, with an unrelenting desire to ensure that all Ontarians have a positive hockey experience – one that is safe, is enjoyable, is culturally diverse and is inclusive so that everyone feels comfortable and supported in doing so right here in Ontario and within the OHA family.
Fun Facts: After the Cougars won the RBC Cup in May of 2017, I then successfully climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro with my son, Alex, in June of 2017! This was a life-long aspiration that shows you what is possible when you put your mind (and body!) into it. Marc’s favourite song is The Tragically Hip’s “It’s lonely at the other end of the rink”, which he credits as being the inspiration for interests in studying and helping to understand the game of hockey.
