Live from the Sphere in Las Vegas, two OJHL players heard their name called at the 2024 NHL Entry Draft
Cambridge, ON – With the 106th overall (7th round) pick, the Calgary Flames have selected winger Trevor Hoskin from the Ontario Junior Hockey League’s (OJHL) Cobourg Cougars.
A product of Belleville, Ontario, Hoskin is a May 2004 birthday, meaning he’s being selected in his third year of draft eligibility. The 2023-24 campaign was his third in the OJHL, and he erupted offensively, posting 42 goals and 100 points over 52 games. In additon to being names OHA player of the year, he was also named the OJHL’s top forward and most valuable player for his efforts. He also helped Canada’s entry at the World Junior-A Championships capture a silver medal.
Hoskin was not listed in the NHL Central Scouting Service’s final rankings or in Elite Prospects’ draft guide. Prior to his breakout season, he wsn’t even on the radar of NHL teams. Hoskins is yet another reminder that player development is not a sprint; but rather a marathon! Hoskin is heading off to play for Niagara University, Division 1 NCAA in September.
Another OHA award winner found the spotlight as well. St. Michael’s Buzzers (OJHL) second-year standout Jonathan Morello also had his name called on Saturday. The Boston Bruins selected Morello with the 154th overall pick in the fifth round. Morello is the 2024 recipient of the OHA’s BJ Monro Award which is given to the player with the highest ranked individual according to the NHL Central Scouting List. A point-per-game player with the Buzzers, Morello will be joining the Clarkson University Hockey team for the 2025-2026 season.
In addition to the current standouts that were drafted, a number of OHA-graduates were selected as well. This includes four (5) GOJHL Alumni that were drafted – Jett Luchanko (round 1 #13 overall by Philadelphia Flyers), Sam O’Reilly (round 1 #32 overall by Edmonton Oilers), Carter George (round 2 #57 overall by Los Angeles Kings), Jared Woolley (round 6 #164 overall by Los Angeles Kings), and William Nicholl (round 7 #196 overall by Edmonton Oilers).
