Drew Booker, 19, of Amherstburg, just outside Windsor, Ont., started his hockey career the same way millions of Canadian kids began theirs.  “I used to play road hockey, on the road with all my friends,” said Booker.  “Hockey has taught me how to be dedicated and persevere through the tough times.”

Now in his second season with the LaSalle Vipers of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League, Booker was a 96 per cent high school student who has transitioned seamlessly to the next academic level.  “I balanced hockey and academics by using my free time wisely,” he said. “If I had an hour practice, instead of sitting on my phone I’d read a book or do some notes or do my homework.”

Being studious has been stupendous. Today Booker is a student in the Engineering program at the University of Windsor. He is one of just six Ontario hockey players who earned a Dairy Farmers of Ontario Bursary. The $8,000 prize is given as a thanks for hard work – and also let’s see what you can do next.

“You grow up in sports where a lot of people gave their time to us. I feel it’s important that I use what I learned from them to give back to the kids that are growing up today,” said Booker.

“This bursary puts me on the right path to where I want to be …I’d like to thank the Dairy Farmers for taking a big first step into my future.”
