Nolan Dawson, a left winger for the  Amherstview Jets, directed a near-perfect high school academic performance towards a bigger end goal – a career in health care.

“Academic success is very important to me,” said Dawson who followed suit with a near flawless record is in fourth-year studies at Queen’s University. A stop at Medical School is hopefully just around the corner.

“Ideally, I want to be a radiologist,” Dawson, 21, who maybe isn’t so sure which path to take.

“I was also thinking maybe the surgery route. I like working with my hands. I always have, growing up. It’s kind of influenced me to take an orthopedic route. I know they work with sports teams a lot. I think that would be very cool.”

This season Dawson is on the roster of the nearby-Queen’s Amherstview Jets of the Provincial Junior Hockey League. He got his start on skates of a different sort.

“I started figure skating – funny enough – just to get my edges going right from the start.”

Dawson was one of six recipients of the Dairy Farmers of Ontario Bursary Program, which graciously awards six $8,000 prizes for an athletic, academic and community job well done – and a kickstart for what’s next.

Dawson, now a mentor, is all-in.

“Public speaking to kids who want to tailor their careers after high school into what they want to do – especially in the medical field,” he said, after also volunteering with youth baseball and hockey teams in Picton.

“I have had so many mentors myself – especially in a small community like Price Edward County – which I know how important it is to give back.”
