THE 2024 OHA BURSARY PROGRAM, PRESENTED BY DAIRY FARMERS OF ONTARIO: REVISITING THE 2023 WINNERS – Alex Hyde

Cambridge, ON – Alex Hyde’s hockey journey started with no ice around age 10.

“I used to play soccer and I switched over to hockey.

“Field hockey with some of my friends or hockey in the gym and I realized how much I liked it.”

Now 22, Hyde is a six-foot-two steady defenceman with the Provincial Junior Hockey League’s Uxbridge Bruins – charting five goals and 12 points in 39 regular season games.

“I was a goalie in house league to start off and then switched to defence and started working my way up the ladder.”

Now further up the ladder of life, Hyde finds himself in fourth-year studies at Wilfrid Laurier University in software engineering with a 95 per cent average.

The man has a hard drive.

“Academic success is hugely important to me,” said Hyde. “That’s what will set me up for my future and my career.

“It’s important because of how much the community has done for me. I help coach my elementary school team. I help coach at hockey camps in the community. In the summers I referee soccer games.”

The family, community, and hockey triangle can be proud to showcase another shining individual sure to be a contributor.

“There are so many options and it is so flexible,” Hyde said of many possible and burgeoning career paths – business applications, operating and network control systems, middleware and games development, to name a few – in the ever-expanding world of developing software solutions for end users.

“Once I graduate I will be able to explore working in different locations and different fields. For now, I am not really sure.

“I think the best way to balance a high caliber of hockey with school and life is to use your time wisely and not waste any hours of the day.”

Amid great success, Hyde remains humble.

“I want to thank the Dairy Farmers of Ontario and a special thanks to my coach Trevor Cox, who is a dairy farmer himself. Shout out!”
